Photometry of the Old Open Cluster Berkeley 17
نویسنده
چکیده
Photometric UBVI CCD photometry is presented for NGC 188 and Berkeley 17. Color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) are constructed and reach well past the mainsequence turn-off for both clusters. Cluster ages are determined by means of isochrone fitting to the cluster CMDs. These fits are constrained to agree with spectroscopic metallicity and reddening estimates. Cluster ages are determined to be 7.0 ± 0.5 Gyr for NGC 188, and 10.0± 1.0Gyr for Berkeley 17, where the errors refer to uncertainties in the relative age determinations. These ages are compared to the ages of relatively metal-rich inner halo/thick disk globular clusters and other old open clusters. Berkeley 17 and NGC 6791 are the oldest open clusters with an age of 10 Gyr. They are 2 Gyr younger than the thick disk globular clusters. These results confirm the status of Berkeley 17 as one of the oldest known open cluster in the Milky Way, and its age provides a lower limit to the age of the Galactic disk. Probing the Age of the Galactic Disc
We report on near IR (J and K bands) observations of two 8× 8 (arcmin) regions centered on the old open clusters Berkeley 17 and Berkeley 18, for which only optical photometry (in B,V and I bands) exists. J and K photometry allows us to obtain an independent estimate of cluster metallicity by means of the relationship between the spectroscopic metallicity and the Red Giant Branch (RGB) slope ca...
متن کاملBV I photometry of the very old open cluster Berkeley 17 ⋆
We have obtained BV I CCD imaging of Berkeley 17, an anticentre open cluster that competes with NGC 6791 as the oldest known open cluster. Using the synthetic colour magnitude diagrams (CMD) technique with three sets of evolutionary tracks we have determined that its age is 8.5 9.0 Gyr, it distance modulus is (m−M)0= 12.2, with a reddening of E(B−V ) = 0.62 0.60. Differential reddening, if pres...
متن کاملBerkeley 22 , an old and distant open cluster towards the Galactic anticentre
We present deep CCD BV I photometry of the distant, old open cluster Berkeley 22, covering from the red giants branch (RGB) to about 6 magnitudes below the main sequence (MS) turn-off. Using the synthetic Colour Magnitude Diagram method with three different types of stellar evolutionary tracks, we estimate values and theoretical uncertainty of distance modulus (m-M)0, reddening E(B−V ) , age τ ...
متن کاملOld open clusters : the interesting case of Berkeley 21 ?
We present CCD BVI photometry of the old open cluster Berkeley 21, one of the most distant clusters in the Galactic anticentre direction, and possibly the lowest metallicity object in the open clusters sample. Its position and metal abundance make it very important for the study of the Galactic disc. Using the synthetic Colour Magnitude Diagram method, we estimate values for distance modulus (m...
متن کاملNear - infrared photometry of the young open clusters NGC 1893 and Berkeley 86 ?
We present photometry in the J and K near-infrared bands for two regions centered on the young open clusters NGC 1893 and Berkeley 86. We study 700 stars down to K = 17 in the field of NGC 1893, and about 2000 stars in the field of Berkeley 86 down to K∼ 16.5, for which near-infrared photometry was insofar not available. Coupling J-K data with UBV photometry taken from literature, we produce re...
